These traditional hand claws (Shuko) feature heavy duty steel construction and attach hand with adjustable heavy duty nylon bands. Designed to be work on the hands for climbing, scaling, and ice walking. For maximum climbing and scaling potential, use in conjunction with foot spikes(Ashiko) also found on this site. Customer Rating: Summary: Not for modern Americans Comment: What most people don't realize is that the historical ninja had exceedingly hard, calloused, and toughly conditioned farmers' hands. No shuko design that resembles the original will be suitable for our soft and sensitive hands. Blood will flow if you expect to do any serious climbing with these or any other shuko of this style. These do closely resemble the original shuko of the ninja, minus the metal wrist ring. Hell, they might even be an improvement. But still, unless you have been working with your hands and conditioning them for 5 - 10 years, don't expect any miraculous climbing capabilities to be imparted by these claws. They will, on the other hand, still be effective for use with taijutsu.
Additionally, the claws should be less hooked. Typically, they were quite a bit more straight. This is the primary reason for my rating of 3 instead of 4. Customer Rating: Summary: Awful for climbing Comment: I got these along with the foot spikes expecting to be able to climb trees. What i got was nothing like what i had expected. the claws on the hand part are at an angle that doesn't allow them to dig into the tree well. In theory, these are great and work perfectly... in real life they stink. They are strong, i'll give them that, but if you are going to buy them, don't expect to be doing any climbing with them.
In my rant i forgot to tell you that they would still be good for self defence and would not require much skill for that.
The bottom line is that if you are looking to reach great hights (or any hights) look elsewhere. But if you are looking to show off to your friends, then these ROCK! Customer Rating: Summary: Very durable Comment: Extremly well made, but are missing bracelet rings. Very sharp and strong, I can easely scale lacquered wooden beams as well as some building fasades. I only wish they had wooden bracelets and leather connectors. But these are quite useful as well.
