Editorial Reviews:

This book is a collection of the life's work and essential teachings of Jigoro Kano, who founded Kodokan Judo in Tokyo in 1882. Kodokan Judo was for Kano the culmination of a lifelong devotion to the jujutsu of the past, which he reorganized along educational lines while taking great care to retain its classical traditions. In doing so, he opened the path from jutsu (skill) to do (way), and broadened the horizons of knowledge until he reached the point at which he began to advocate seiryoku zenyo (maximum efficiency) and jita kyoei (mutual prosperity), which represent the universality and ideal of human existence, and are the core values of judo.

Throughout his life, Kano repeatedly remphasized grasping the correct meaning of judo and putting it into practice. That is to say, one must understand that judo is the way by which one can make the best use of one's mental and physical energy, and put that into use for the good of society. Because judo was defined in this way, what had once merely fallen under the category of martial art—a fighting skill used to defend against an attack—became subsumed into an altogether richer, more complex, and universal judo, which in turn evolved into a principle that can be applied across the spectrum of human life. The circumstances surrounding the development of judo are described throughout this book, as are its underlying principles, which the author believes have unibersal applicability to everyday life.

This book will be an invaluable addition to the liberaries of all judo practitioners around the world.

Summary: The Historical Why
Comment: Master Jigoro Kano's book gives a great historical account on why he developed Judo to promote fitness, sport, and cultural interaction; and is not a book focused on technique or application. This compilation of Master Kano's works enables the reader to gain an understanding into the thinking and ultimate goal of the Founder of Judo.

Summary: what mind over muscle ?
Comment: if you are interested in the history of Judo then may be this is the book as it is "supposed" to be written by the founder. But there are more comprehensive books around on the history and the evolution of judo from jujitsu and how it became a sport in Olympics. However, if your expectation is to read about how to use the "mind over muscle" or learn practical competition skills and technques, they just aren't there - zero.

Summary: Must Read
Comment: This is one of the best books on judo for the serious student or accomplished instructor. Most books on judo offer good information on applying competition techniques and certainly have their place. What is lacking in many of those books, however, is the fundamental philosophies and principles Jigoro Kano envisioned as the basis of this art and, ultimately, where in life it should lead its students. It is a must read for all judoka.

Summary: not bad but ...
Comment: it could be so much better. Again as in book II, the artwork is downright ugly and there are too many quizzes and not enough kanji. The kanji were introduced at too leisurely a pace IMO. To be fair, even though I knew all JLPT4 kanji, I did learn new stuff from this workbook --- but it's not something I want or need to keep. I xeroxed the quizzes and will donate this to charity for a tax writeoff.
