Editorial Reviews:

"A man who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in his every action."--Samurai Maximum.

Under the guidance of such celebrated masters as Ed Parker and the immortal Bruce Lee, Joe Hyams vividly recounts his more than 25 years of experience in the martial arts. In his illuminating story, Hyam reveals to you how the daily application of Zen principles not only developed his physical expertise but gave him the mental discipline to control his personal problems-self-image, work pressure, competition. Indeed, mastering the spiritual goals in martial arts can dramatically alter the quality of your life-enriching your relationships with people, as well as helping you make use of all your abilities.

Summary: A great book
Comment: very insightful, short for quick reading in today's busy world, yet full of commonsense applications

Summary: a friend will be sorely missed
Comment: I first bought this book in 1986 in Hawaii as I was studying Aikido, soon thereafter I moved to Los Angeles. Seeking another Aikido dojo to train in, I could not find one that resonated for me, so I turned to the yellow pages, where I found an ad for Bong Soo Han Hapkido, a name which I read in Joe's book. This led me to 10 years later getting to meet the author Joe, in the very studio that his book had led me to. I was very fortunate to share many wonderful times with Joe on the mat and over lunches, who even in his 80's still loved dim sum that he wrote about in his book.

Joe passed away Nov. 8th 2008 and I will forever be grateful for how his book and life has provided a excellent guide for me to follow, I will miss him greatly.

Summary: A Great Little Book
Comment: I found this book to be a very interesting read. It is a great little book which contains 28 short commentaries on different martial arts teachings and philosophies. It would be especially useful for beginning martial artists who are not yet familiar with some of the terms and ideas behind these teachings. In print since the late 70's, it is still useful for today's martial artist. It is worth checking out if you haven't read it yet.

Summary: Read it over and over and find something different each time.
Comment: I was given this book by a fellow martial artist about 8 years ago when I was training for my 2nd degree Black Belt. I thought it would be a book about Zen "in" martial arts. This book is so much more. I have read it dozens of times. Honestly, I have given copies of this inexpensive little book to many of my close friends who have no invovlement in martial arts. All have come back at some point to tell me how much they enjoyed it and passed it on or recommended it to others. If you read it once, you will want to read it again and again. This book is like the petals of a flower. Each time you read it(or peel away a petal)you will find another facet of wisdom that applies to everyday life. Each chapter only takes up 3 to four pages but each stands alone in concept and thought. It is a wonderful book.

Summary: More than the fighting aspects of martial arts
Comment: As a martial arts fan in the 70's, I enjoyed the references to the big name martial artists of the day, like Bong Soo Han. Joe Hyams describes how his martial arts training helped him in his daily life. This included holding his own during a meeting and recovering from a serious illness during a trip in Europe. If you are only interested in busting heads, this book might not have much appeal to you. If you are of the sort who wonders why martial arts incorporates the importance of self-control, respect, breath control and spirituality, then this small book holds some answers. The book motivated me to train more diligently.
